On Thursday morning, 29 January, two separate robbery incidents unfolded in Dhaka, leaving a grocery shopkeeper in Pallabi and a construction worker in Khilkhet injured. Both victims are currently under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police have logged the cases with the respective police stations for further action.
In Pallabi, under the jurisdiction of Mirpur‑12 police, 45‑year‑old Mohammad Hossein Deepu, proprietor of a local grocery shop, stepped out of his house to light a cigarette. At that moment three armed men on a motorcycle opened fire, striking him on the left side of his leg. The bullet pierced the muscle and exited near the knee, causing significant bleeding.
The robbers also grabbed Deepu’s pocket money, amounting to 17,000 taka, and snatched his mobile phone. Bystanders quickly assisted and rushed him first to Kurmitola General Hospital, and later he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialized care. He remains in the emergency ward, where doctors are monitoring his condition.
Meanwhile, at the Khilkhet bus stand near the railway line, 28‑year‑old construction laborer Mo. Liton was returning from a job site in Rupganj, Narayanganj. While waiting for a bus, three assailants approached and inflicted a knife wound on his left shoulder. The attackers fled after taking his cash, about 500 taka, and his phone.
Liton was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the emergency team cleaned and sutured the wound. His vital signs stabilized after initial treatment, and he is now being observed for any complications. Police recovered the stolen items from the scene were not found.
Officer Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed that both injured persons are receiving emergency medical attention. He added that the incidents have been formally reported to Pallabi and Khilkhet police stations, and that FIRs have been filed. The police camp will coordinate with the respective police stations to ensure swift investigation and possible apprehension of the suspects.
Investigators have started gathering evidence, including CCTV footage from nearby shops and the bus stand, and are interviewing witnesses who may have seen the perpetrators’ escape routes. Forensic teams are also examining the bullet recovered from Deepu’s wound to identify the caliber used.
Police have urged residents to stay alert, especially in densely populated neighborhoods and transport hubs, and to report any suspicious behavior without delay. Victims are advised to seek prompt medical assistance and cooperate fully with law enforcement to aid the investigation. Community leaders have also been requested to assist in disseminating safety guidelines among local residents.
The twin incidents highlight a concerning rise in armed robberies across the capital, prompting calls for reinforced police patrolling in vulnerable zones. Authorities assure the public that security measures will be intensified and that the offenders will be pursued vigorously.
